2005 Conservation Farm Award

Tiessen Acres – Martin and Paul Tiessen

The Winner of the 2005 Conservation Farm Award was announced at the Essex Soil & Crop Improvement Association (ESCIA) Annual Meeting on Thursday, December 8, 2005. The award is presented each year to the farming operation which best display’s conservation minded farming practices from those nominated. The farms are graded on tillage practices, crop rotation, chemical use and storage, knowledge of fertility programs, BMP’s and overall farm maintenance. The winner is determined by a group of Directors from the ESCIA which visit each of the nominees farms and score the farms based on the CFA worksheet. This year the winner of the Conservation Farm Award is Tiessen Acres (Martin and Paul Tiessen) from Leamington.

Features of the Tiessen’s farm include; no-till cropping; crop rotation including wheat, corn, soybeans and tomatoes (cover crops are used for erosion protection) and ditch bank protection by buffer strips, rock chutes and tile outlet protection. Other features include windbreaks, 10 acre wood lot, a natural wetland as well as a irrigation pond. The Tiessen’s have been pioneers of many of the modern conservation minded practices being used in our area with tomatoes and are continuously looking for ways improve their practices while being respectful to the environment.
