2007 Conservation Farm Award

Malden Valley Farms

The Winner of the 2007 Conservation Farm Award was announced at the Essex Soil & Crop Improvement Association (ESCIA) Annual Meeting on Thursday, December 6, 2007. The award is presented each year to the farming operation which best display’s conservation minded farming practices from those nominated. The farms are graded on tillage practices, crop rotation, chemical use and storage, knowledge of fertility programs, Best Management Practices and overall farm maintenance. The winner is determined by a committee of Directors from the ESCIA. This year the winner of the Conservation Farm Award is Malden Valley Farms (Tony Unholzer) of Woodslee.

Features of Malden Valley Farms include; no-till cropping; crop rotation including corn, soybeans, wheat under seeded with clover, and hay; ditch bank protection by buffer strips, rock chutes and tile outlet protection. Other features include windbreaks, a woodlot, and a pond. Tony has been farming for over 50 years and has been incorporating many of the modern conservation minded practices into his farming operation. Malden Valley Farms has an Environmental Farm Plan.
