2008 Conservation Farm Award

The Winner of the 2008 Conservation Farm Award was announced at the Essex Soil & Crop Improvement Association (ESCIA) Annual Meeting on Thursday, December 4, 2008. The award is presented each year to the farming operation which best display’s conservation minded farming practices from those nominated. The farms are graded on tillage practices, crop rotation, chemical use and storage, knowledge of fertility programs, Best Management Practices and overall farm maintenance. The winner is determined by a committee of Directors from the ESCIA. This year the winner of the Conservation Farm Award is Marc Rivest of Comber.

Features of Marc Rivest’s farm include; no-till cropping; crop rotation including corn, soybeans and wheat under seeded with clover; ditch bank protection by buffer strips; rock chutes; grid soil sampling and variable rate fertilizer application. Other features include drop inlets for soil erosion protection, windbreaks and a woodlot. Marc has been farming for 37 years and has been incorporating many of the modern conservation minded practices into his farming operation. Marc has an Environmental Farm Plan, is the chairman of the Southwest Agricultural Conference organizing committee and has participated in OMAFRA’s Corn Nitrogen Calculator program and the 2008 Carbon Offset Pilot project.
