The Winner of the 2009 Conservation Farm Award was announced at the Essex Soil & Crop Improvement Association (ESCIA) Annual Meeting on Thursday, December 3, 2009. The award is presented each year to the farming operation which best display’s conservation minded farming practices from those nominated. The farms are graded on tillage practices, crop rotation, chemical use and storage, knowledge of fertility programs, Best Management Practices and overall farm maintenance. The winner is determined by a committee of Directors from the ESCIA. This year the winner of the Conservation Farm Award is the Thibert Farm of Comber.

Features of The Thibert Farm include: no-till cropping; crop rotation including corn, soybeans, hay, wheat and clover; ditch banks protected by vegetative buffer zones and rock chutes. Other features include perimeter windbreaks and a 6 acre mixed hardwood tree planting that includes a 1 acre wetland. Richard Thibert purchased the farm in 2004, a property that was originally owned by his great, great grandfather. Richard immediately started to improve the property by planting trees and establishing buffer zones. The Thibert Farm includes a stone flour mill and a farm gate store that sells beef, pork and baked goods, all products of the farms naturally produced livestock and grains. The Thibert farm has enthusiastically participated in the Canada-Ontario Environmental Farm Plan program and has implemented the use of many Best Management Practices.

Congratulations to The Thibert Farm and keep up the fine work!
