The farms are graded on tillage practices, crop rotation, chemical use and storage, knowledge of fertility programs, Best Management Practices and overall farm maintenance. The winner is determined by a committee of Directors from the ESCIA. This year the winner of the Conservation Farm Award is David Buchanan of Comber.

Features of the Buchanan farm include: no-till cropping; crop rotation including corn, soybeans, hay, wheat and clover; ditch banks protected by vegetative buffer zones and rock chutes. Other features include perimeter windbreaks, woodlots and a wetland/pond. The Buchanan Farm also includes solar panels and will soon include a wind turbine and a hydro sub-transfer station for electric power production.
